Learn To Follow The Holy Spirit.
Many years ago a man was about to get married but on the day of the traditional wedding, he refused to show up for the ceremony.
The bride’s family sent emissaries to him to beg him to show up because guests were already gathered at the venue. The man refused to leave his house. They sent more emissaries and at 5pm that day he turned up for the wedding.
The man did not want to go ahead with that wedding. That was the RESTRAINT of the Holy Spirit, holding him back, cautioning him, giving him a warning, but he listened to the voices of men rather than obey the voice of God.
That marriage was hell for that man. It was one problem after another. After a few years the woman divorced him. She never wanted a husband. All she wanted was children and as soon as she had her children she got rid of the man. He went through many challenges and died at the prime of his life.
This is a true life story. I know that man and I also know the lady involved. The woman was not evil or wicked. They were not just meant for each other. They were never meant to get married. They were never meant to be together. When you are with someone you are not meant to be with all you will see is their weaknesses and bad side. You will never see or enjoy anything good in them. There are certain people assigned by God to our lives to help us function in and accomplish our assignments. They are helpers. We should pray that helpers find us, and we find them by an act of divine providence. Continue reading
Do Not Sit By A Dry Brook.
Elijah sat down on a rock in contemplation. Something was wrong. He could sense it. Yesterday, he discovered that the brook Cherith from where he had drank water for months had stopped flowing. All he had left was a skin full of water. He knew it wouldn’t last beyond the next day. He shifted uneasily on the rock and looked east with expectation, waiting for the ravens to swoop down and bring him the meal for the day. Since he obeyed the instructions of the Lord and came here, the Lord had hidden him from the persecution of that worshipper of baal, that souless murderer, Jezebel. The birds had brought him bread and meat in the morning and repeated the same meal in the evening. The birds had always been on time. They never failed to show up. But this morning, they were late in coming. It had never happened before. He shielded his creased brow from the morning sun with his cloak. But Elijah waited in vain. The ravens never showed up.
The brook had dried up, but Elijah sat there, waiting. While Elijah waited at that dry brook, the Lord had prepared a widow in his next location of assignment, to feed him and sustain him through the famine. But Elijah did not know this, so he sat down by a dry brook brooding.
What is a dry brook?
A dry brook is what is no longer producing fruit, positive results for you.
A dry brook is no longer meeting your needs.
A dry brook is what used to increase you but now impoverishes you.
A dry brook sucks your creativity.
A dry brook is what viciously limits your productivity.
A dry brook is a place of broken dreams.
A dry brook is a place of failure.
A dry brook is a place of disappointment, frustration and emptiness.
A dry brook refers to a past season.
A dry brook is a past phase in your life.
A dry brook is a relationship which has ran its course and exhausted its usefulness.
A dry brook is a job which no longer brings you joy or a business which is no longer growing. Continue reading
Hello everyone. How are you doing?
When someone tells you to ‘Stay in your lane,’ you should ask yourself these questions:
Does this person know you well enough to make this statement?
Was that person present when God gave you your assignment?
Is that person now monitoring your life as if he or she would reward you for what you do right or punish you for your errors?
When you step out to pursue something new, when you dare to pursue a dream, when you break out of your mould to do something different with your life, there will always be people who who think it is their God given assignment to keep you in the place where they think you belong. Continue reading
In Genesis 17, God came to Abraham in a vision and told him that he would become the father of many nations. God promised him that he would give birth to a son and through this son all the nations of the earth would be blessed. While God was talking about a yet to be born Isaac, Abraham was thinking about Ishmael. They were having different conversations.
You see, God could never use Ishmael to effect His purposes because Ishmael was a product of Abraham’s ingenuity to help himself and help God fulfil His promise of giving him a son. So Ishmael was disqualified. He was not a part of God’s plan for Abraham.
But Abraham cried out to God to use Ishmael, to carry out His purposes through Ishmael.
And [he] said to God, Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!
An Ishmael looks successful but it will stagnate you. You cannot grow beyond the level of an Ishmael. Yes it is successful. Yes, you are doing well, but an Ishmael will get to a certain point beyond which it cannot grow. Your success will plateau and will remain at that point for as long as you want to continue to resist the Isaac God wants to bring into your life.
An Ishmael is the enemy of your destiny. An Ishmael may look good but it is a satanic weapon designed by the enemy to limit you, cripple your progress and stop you from rising to the next level in God’s plan. An Ishmael may bring you money, success, fame and popularity but it is a weapon in the hands of the enemy against you.
An Ishmael is a ceiling beyond which you cannot rise, it is a containment beyond which you cannot go. An Ishmael creates a satanic containment around your life that keeps you from expanding, multiplying, increasing. The containment may be financial, geographical or spiritual. As long as you hold on to an Ishmael you cannot break out of the limitations you presently experience. Until you release an Ishmael you will be severely limited. Continue reading
And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before you!
Ishmael was the son of Abraham given birth to by Hagar. It took Abraham many years of waiting before he got this child. He was already ninety nine years old and the chances of having another child were next to impossible. The fact that he could father a child with Hagar was a miracle in itself. As far as Abraham was concerned Ishmael was ‘the one.’ He was done waiting for another child. Anything God wanted to do he could do through Ishmael. But God was telling him that his wife Sarai will conceive and give birth to a child when she was past menopause. This was too much for Abraham to receive.
And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
God told Abraham that he was going to become great, become a father of many nations. As he listened to God speak all he heard was that through ISHMAEL he would become a father of many nations. His mind was clouded by Ishmael and he could not go beyond him to understand what The Lord was telling him. Ishmael totally dominated his thinking and limited his capacity to connect with the mind of God and comprehend the purpose of God for his life. Continue reading
When God Gives You A Warning.
And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it.
Years ago brother Fred was on fire for God. He always talked about how we would do great things for God and the kingdom. He was someone you would love to hang out with if you had a hunger and thirst for the things of God. Influencing and impacting the world for Christ was his passion, everything else was secondary. He was involved in some small business supplying items to a large company. In the process of time the company began to give him bigger contracts and with this came more opportunity to travel the world and make more money. It was like the heavens opened on him and the money poured into his business. Soon he spent more time in foreign countries, pursuing his business and meeting new contacts. The money grew. Then I noticed that he stopped talking about his personal involvement in ministry. He stopped talking about how he wanted to impact the world for Jesus. Now that he was actually going round the world, something he had prayed for for years, he had lost the zeal to pursue the vision. He said he wanted to ‘make more money and give it to the church’, as if God was indigent needed his money to run the affairs of the kingdom. He attended church to pray for his business, not to pray concerning the dying fire in his soul. He had money but he had lost the zeal to pursue the ministry God gave him.
Let us look at some lessons from our text.
1. Paul said he should ‘take heed’.
Paul singles out a man named Archippus and sent him a warning. If it wasn’t so important Paul wouldn’t have mentioned it in his letter to the Colosians.
What does this mean? It means to be careful, to watch your step, to evaluate your actions and make sure you are doing the right thing, you are going in the right direction, you are pursuing the right thing. Why did Paul tell him to be careful? It was because this was a serious matter and if he made a mistake it would be detrimental to his relationship with The Lord.
Archippus, take heed.
You should substitute your name for Archippus. Be careful because if you are not careful you will make a big mistake with your life. There are different kinds of mistakes in life. Some mistakes can be corrected. Some are difficult to correct but you can still manage and struggle to live with the consequences of your wrong, unfortunate choices. But some mistakes cannot be corrected and are impossible to live with. If you make such mistakes you have essentially thrown your life away, you have abrogated your destiny, you have shot yourself in the foot, you have used your own hands to destroy your life.
Paul was telling Archippus that he had only one opportunity to do this, and if he missed it there was no way to fix it. Paul was saying, ‘You cannot do this again. If you miss it, if you miss this opportunity to pursue and fulfil your calling, you would have essentially wasted your life. I don’t want you to waste your life, so be careful.’ Continue reading
When God Shuts a door.
And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth.
Samuel Akins worked in a bank for fifteen years until there was a change in management and he was laid off. After searching for another job for months he came to the realisation that his skill-set was useful in the banking industry and the banks had no vacancy for a man at his level. After he bemoaned his situation for a few more months he started praying and asking The Lord what to do with his life, that was when Lord stirred up an idea He had given him some years earlier which was to venture into real estate development. When The Lord gave him that idea he was comfortable in the bank and refused to explore it. But after months of joblessness and dwindling financial resources he was desperate for solutions to his situation, so he pursued and developed that idea. Today the company he launched about ten years ago have built impressive estates in various cities in Nigeria. In an interview he ascribed his success to ‘the door God shut by being laid off at his bank.’ He said if that hadn’t happened he wouldn’t have ventured out to launch his company which has brought him immense success and emotional satisfaction.
God opens doors and shuts doors in order to establish his kingdom and effect His will, plan and purpose in our lives.
No one likes to talk about shut doors. We all want The Lord to open new doors for us, and keep on opening them, not shut the ones that are already open to us. Continue reading
The bible says that our calling is holy. It means it is sacred. Something that is sacred should not be handled lightly or irreverently. Many desecrate their holy calling by substituting it with the pursuit of carnal things.
2 Timothy 1:9
Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
What we have in Christ Jesus is a high calling. No pursuit or desire is higher than the calling we have in Christ. Paul said he pressed into his calling. If it were easy to obtain and fulfil his calling he wouldn’t talk about pressing into it. Many want to sit back and watch their calling come to pass. But they will end up frustrated. Nothing good in the kingdom will come to you without commitment, tenacity and a strong sense of purpose. We have to press in the place of prayer and study of the word. It is those who press in after The Lord who possess the blessings of the kingdom.
I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Paul prayed that the eyes of our spirit may be flooded with light, that we may have deeper understanding and clarity about our calling. This is a prayer we should all pray daily. When we have clarity about our calling we won’t fall into the trap of satanic distractions.
The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
The enemy will throw a spanner in the engine of your life to destabilise you. He will try to keep you unbalanced on your feet so you never stabilise enough to pursue your calling.
The enemy uses distractions to keep us busy doing something else while we do nothing about our real calling. These distractions may not be bad things, in fact many times they are good things, good causes, legitimate pursuits. However The Lord did not assign you to pursue these things. The enemy entices us with success, riches and fame in the secular world. He tells us that the whole world will worship us and be friends with us if we pursue these distractions. If we do not focus on God’s will and purpose for our lives, we will begin to give heed to satanic lies and begin to pursue distractions. Continue reading
