And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the Lord.
When the economy of a nation is under performing, it impoverishes the people.
When the natural resources of a nation are unexplored because the people are too intellectually lazy, it impoverishes the people.
When the economic opportunities, possibilities of a nation are not taken advantage of, it impoverishes the people in that nation.
When a siege is laid against the economic resources of a nation it impoverishes the people. 2Kings 6.
When the resources of a nation are pilfered or pillaged by inside or outside forces, it impoverishes the nation.
This passage of scripture shows us that poverty doesn’t just happen. There is a cause, there is a reason behind every form of impoverishment.
Bad situations don’t just happen. Negative occurrences in our lives do not give birth to themselves, situations don’t just develop around us of their own accord. There is always a cause behind them. There is a reason behind them.
In Judges 6 the Medianites besieged Israel. They entered their land at the time of harvest and wiped out all the produce of the land. They left nothing for the people of Israel. Their aim was to completely destroy Israel off the face of the earth.
The bible records in Judges 6:6 that Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Medianites. There are different kinds of poverty: financial, material, intellectual, social, spiritual. The worst kind of poverty is spiritual, the poverty of the soul. Some people who have money and material things in abundance think that their lives are fine and they have no need for spiritual things. Nothing could be further from the truth. Having money is not in any way an indication of deep spirituality. Read Luke 12:15-21. Some of the most spiritually destitute among men have money. In Revelations 3:17, a church thought that they were rich and had need of nothing but the Lord corrected their arrogance and said they were wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked. There are people who are financially impoverished and there are people who are spiritually impoverished. Behind both forms of impoverishment is a cause, a reason.
There was a cause behind the impoverishment of Israel. Their impoverishment wasn’t a natural occurrence. Their harvests were not self combusting. No! Some people were deliberately destroying those harvests! There was a cause, a reason behind the poverty, the lack and the financial struggle which Israel experienced. The bible gave it a face and also gave it a name. The cause, the reason for their impoverishment was the Medianites.
As with a nation so with individuals.
Each one of us has his or her own individual, personal economy.
If you are not utilising, optimising, maximising whatever resources or talents or opportunities God has given and invested in your life, you will experience some form of poverty. If you waste your energy on things that distract you from areas of your core competence, you will experience some form of poverty.
If we look at our lives and are not happy with what we see or experience, if we feel restricted, boxed in, limited, not growing, not flourishing, not producing good fruit, we are experiencing some form of poverty.
Difficult financial situations don’t just happen in our lives, there is a reason behind them. People don’t suddenly become spiritually impoverished without a cause. There is a reason why things are the way they are in your life. There is a reason why certain doors have not opened for you no matter how much you’ve struggled. There is a reason why you’ve been fighting the same battle for a protracted period of time without experiencing any relief whatsoever. There is a reason why you are where you are in life. There is a reason why you’ve lost your fire and zeal for the things of God. There’s a reason why your life is falling to pieces around you. There’s a reason why your business is failing. There’s a reason why you are not married, why your relationships end up in rejection and break-ups and never crystalise in marriage. There’s a reason why you have issues in your marriage. There’s a reason why your ministry is not growing.
There is always a reason.
To rise above your current situation, you should ask The Lord to peel off the layers of deception that cover your eyes so that you may see clearly and discover the reason behind your current situation. You must go to The Lord in prayer and ask Him, “Lord, why are things the way they are? What is behind this situation in my life? Show me the reason why this situation is occurring in my life.” Ask questions! When we ask the right questions, we receive or discover the right answers.
You cannot sit in front of a television set watching meaningless soaps and movies and expect to uncover the reason why your life is the way it is. You cannot watch footballers entertain you for hours and think that you will find out why your finances are the way they are. You cannot be engaged in meaningless conversations and expect that somehow things will change. They won’t until you do something about it.
If we want to find out the reason behind our struggles and challenges we must seek The Lord diligently in the place of prayer. We must devote time to seek his face and ask the right questions in the place of prayer. When we seek The Lord for answers, He will open our eyes to see the real reason behind our situation.
Some people are distracted and think that the economy is behind their business and financial woes. It isn’t. In some of the harshest economies on the planet people still find a way to thrive and flourish. Some people blame their government, their president and their country for their financial situation. It’s all a distraction. Like Israel did, we need to cry out to The Lord for help.
Don’t be deceived. You have an enemy who has vowed to do everything possible to stop you from fulfilling God’s Will, purpose and assignment for your life. The bible says in Ephesians 6 that our warfare is not against flesh and blood. Don’t waste your energy pursuing shadows. The reason for your situation is hidden and it is in the place of prayer that it will be exposed and stripped naked before you. When we know the reason behind our situation it becomes easy to pray strategically and strike it a deadly and terminal blow. Instead of playing guess work with your life and future, humbly ask The Lord to show you the reason for your situation and when He does, your prayer then becomes accurate, powerful and productive. Some of us are presently eating from the same plate with the very people the enemy is using to impoverish our lives and we can’t discern them because we are spiritually blind. We need to cry out to The Lord to open our eyes to the truth.
It is in the place of personal prayer that The Lord lays out His strategy for defeating our enemies. The Lord shows us how to fight our battles using His own weapons, His own ideas and His own strategies. The Lord gives us direction and instructions on how to out-think, out-manoeuvre, out-strategise the opposition every single time and come out victorious.
